DR.
DAVID W. ELLIS
Dr. David Ellis’s consulting interests and expertise have
been informed and influenced by 25 years in chief executive officer
positions, first at a strong liberal arts and engineering college
(Lafayette College, Easton, PA) and then at a science center (Museum
of Science, Boston). He has also served or is serving on more
than 10 non-for-profit boards and two corporate boards.
Stemming from
this wealth of “in the trenches” experience
a significant area of his consulting work has been in board relations/governance.
David has found that many of the issues that arise for the CEO, the
Board Chair, board members or senior staff are the result of one
or more of these people not being aware of the experiences of others
in similar circumstances. Working in a collaborative manner, a seasoned
outside voice can often bring significant value to the institution
desirous of addressing such board and staff related questions.
A
second area of David’s consulting work has been in planning. Many
institutions often feel the need for planning but do not have in-house
the expertise or an individual with sufficient time to lead an institutional
planning effort. David’s work in this area has been as
facilitator / leader working with staff and sometimes board members
as well. Some planning has been institution-wide while other
projects have been more focused.
A
third area of interest has been administration / operations including
matters of organization, team building, budget and finance, and human
resources. Most of these types of issues tend to have generic
components as well as certain aspects that tend to be distinctive
to the institution and its staff and culture. Working to optimize
operations and administrative function is an exciting kind of work
as the results can often be seen quickly and sometimes dramatically.

Lastly, David has been significantly involved in one major capital campaign and
several project campaigns, and has been ultimately, but not directly, responsible
for numerous annual fund, membership or alumni fund, corporate and foundation
fundraising efforts.
